Social Media Demographics

Snapchat, Vine and Tumblr have the youngest audience: in these social networks between 28% and 45% of the users are in the 18-24 age group.

If you're between 25 and 34 and are on the lookout for a social media with the highest ratio of peers, then you should probably sign up on Instagram, Pinterest or Snapchat. Here at least one every five users will be in your age group.

Notes: Data is from a March 2015 report by comScore, referring to 2014 data. It only looks at 18+ years-old social media users from the US.

The older you get, the more likely it's Facebook or LinkedIn that will have the biggest share of users in your age group.  Once you're over 65, Facebook is the only place where you'll have a chance to meet one peer every ten users. If you're in this stage of your life, you might want to stay away from Snapchat, where you'll run the risk of being considered an outsider: only one every 100 users will be 65+

The chance of being surrounded by older or younger peers seems related to the reach of each social media. Keep in mind that this is a very small sample, but in the 9 sites surveyed, the more audience reach a social site has, the more likely its share of 65+ users will be higher. On the other hand, it's more niche sites that are dominated by 18-24 year olds - like Snapchat ( only 11% of digital population reached), Tumblr (25%) and Vine (14%).
